Oil pastel painting of Neelix on the pool table.

Cat On The Pool Table

I’ve been to the art group today with Rich’s Parents and I’ve finished off an oil pastel painting I’ve been working on for a few weeks. It’s actually the first oil pastel painting I’ve done, which has made me feel Impressed with oil pastels. This is the very reason why I refer to them as paintings. These Paul Rubens oil pastels blend almost like oil paints and it’s difficult to call them ‘Drawings’.

This is how the day began.

First thing in the morning. I’m lounging around before starting the day and I start creating some music on the Polyend Tracker. Fluff pants decides to jump on my lap and take a nap. I’ve got that new album I’m trying to finish off and I’d like it to still be summer when I release. More about this in another blog post.

Neelix definitely suspects something here. The way he’s looking at that sketch, he looks as if he’s recognized himself.

I’ve been working on this painting for a few weeks (not continuously mind you). It’s kinda ended up like an art group project as I continue it whenever I’m there.

I’ve taken a photo periodically just to show the progress, as you can see below.

Neelix Pastel Painting Stage 1

Jan (Rich’s mum) is really good at art. She was talking about the stage of a painting where she almost feels like throwing it away because it looks a mess. She has a point because I go through the same stage each time I paint. Just like the image below where I’ve put all the colours in their places. The image doesn’t look the best, it made me feel I had messed it up.

That was until I got the smudge stick/blending stump out. I keep forgetting what they’re called, tortillion?
All you need at this stage is that perseverance, to push past those doubts and keep going.

This is Robin, Rich’s dad, he is an amazing man with a big heart, never afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and does it with grace. He’s the only one around here who fully gets me and knows what I’m about <3

As you can see I had mostly finished the painting. At this stage I was just doing the final touches here and there.

The day was absolutely beautiful. I think summer is finally here. When I got home I sprayed some Sennelier ‘fixitif’ fixative on the painting.

Just like the lollipop painting I did, I captured a beautiful moment. It was when Rich’s daughter and I were playing pool and Neelix jumped onto the pool table. He went into one of his mischievous moods, that surface would have been ruined had he clawed at it and that’s why he wasn’t allowed on it.

Below is a video I’ve uploaded of the whole ordeal.

I have sketched this very same painting onto a canvas. I want to paint this in oil paints and compare the two. So far I’m happy with how this has come out in oil pastels, in fact I didn’t expect this kind of result. I must say Impressed. I’m curious now as how oil paints compares to these oil pastels.

Oh my gosh, I love this painting of Neelix! Without even knowing the backstory, I could tell by the angle of his ears that he’s in “don’t mess with me” mode. You did a fantastic job with the pastels—I can ‘feel’ his fur, although he might not allow me to pet him in this particular moment, lol.

Lol! you’re right about the mode he’s in, he’s full of mischief here. Once you watch that video I uploaded of how all this began, you’ll know lol

Hiya Maddi ☺️ and this is a wonderful blog post that really shows the creative process! Now l know why the oil pastels were so popular when l worked back in the art shop way back when.

Very satisfying to use by the looks of it and the results are stunning. It so nice that you, Jan…

(me and Rich’s synchronicity’s are starting to scare me a bit as my Mum was called Jan as well ♥️)

…,Robin and the rest of the family are all so invested in their art and that you all come together and enjoy and inspire each other.

My partner Fi has been reading your artwork section of the blog and that’s got her creativity massively flowing and she has been experimenting this week and l will put some her projects up on Twitter and tag you in Maddi.

I look forward to more paintings and drawings as the summer months progress and of course l am all too eager for the new album once that gets released as well.

All the best to you, my adopted half brother Rich at this point lol 😂, Mr Neelix and the rest of the family ☺️👍🏼

      Hi Jason 🙂
Oil pastels as you probably know, vary so much depending on brands, some are more solid, others much creamier. Like the Sennelier ones apparently are pretty much cream sticks lol!
Stupidly expensive though! The Paul Rubens ones which I have seem to be a good balance.

No way, your mum was called Jan?!? Okay this is getting more freaky as it goes on. Lol adopted half brother! :-))) Are you and Rich keeping secrets from me I wonder! Lol!

I just noticed Fi’s artwork after reading your comment, she’s good! and as I replied there the same favourite colour both of us have…Now i’m wondering what other freakiness will unfold lol!

Thanks so much for the lovely comments as always Jason, Wish both yourself and Fi all the best! 🙂

When I saw the painting, I saw Neelix on a Pool table with a bunch of eyes around him! LOL only then when my eyes focused better did I realise they were Pool Balls!

You even captured the sun shining through his ears! and the slight brown colours he gets!!

    AMAZING work!!

      Lol! Eyeballs, different coloured ones.
Thing is people don’t realise how difficult black cats actually are to both photograph and paint. It’s not just ‘paint them black and be done with it’ You kinda need to capture the essence of his personality and expression. Thankfully Neelix isn’t fully black black, well I guess no cat really is. But he has a lot of brown in his fur.
      Thank you Wayne 🙂

Well it’s the weekend and once again the sun is shining. Perhaps summer really has arrived. The garden beckons as does Maddi’s latest blog post.

Cats, pool tables, laughter, and artwork! Awesome.

So much fun in that video! The laughter combined with that, oh so familiar, “look” that Mr Neelix is giving us. Haha. When cats get that look you know something is about to go down and everyone else is just along for the ride!

Your painting really captures that whole moment with Neelix beautifully and I’m just loving those eyes and his little nose!

Please give some extra skritches to Neelix. I think he’s earned them.

    Thank you Maddi!

Here’s wishing yourself, Rich, Neelix, and your pool team, a lovely weekend.

Haha I just get this feeling Neelix has a sense of humour, as well as other cats. Their behaviour is too much of a coincidence. It’s like when he put his head into that middle pocket :-))

Thing is, it’s more difficult than people realise to paint a black cat. You have to really think less about any distictive marking (on the body) because there is none. And think about the look in his eyes or something in his mannerisms.
Thanks for your kind words about the painting, I really appreciate 🙂

I will for sure give some extra skritches to Neelix haha
Wishing you a lovely week Paul, I hope you’re well!
